The Pacific Pride Festival celebrates the triumphs of a community overcoming discrimination. It is also a response to unique and current issues impacting our community on local, state and national levels. Over the past year, we have seen a rise in hate crimes and incidents locally. Ethan shares his experience of a violent verbal attack just this past November on State Street:   

“Seconds after lunging towards me, the man began to hurl homophobic slurs. Following this, the man continued to assail me with sexual comments and hateful remarks about people suffering from HIV/AIDS. I wish that my experience was unique, but there have been several other recent LGBTQ+ hate crimes and bias incidents in Santa Barbara County, including many that are never reported. It’s on us to strengthen our community by bringing people together and providing a safe space for people to celebrate their authentic selves.“
