Top 10 Things You Can Do Today
To Leave a Legacy

  1. Prepare a will. Fewer than 40% of those who pass away have one. Without a will, you have no control over your estate upon your death.
  2. Leave a specific dollar amount, asset, or percentage of your will or trust to the nonprofit organization(s) of your choice.
  3. Name a nonprofit organization of your choice as the beneficiary of your pension plan or IRA.
  4. Name your favorite charity as the beneficiary or owner of an existing life insurance policy.
  5. Purchase a new life insurance policy naming your favorite charity as the owner or beneficiary.
  6. Remember loved ones through memorial gifts.
  7. Consider various assets for your lifetime charitable gift. These include, but are not limited to, stocks, bonds, CD's, real estate, vehicles, art and jewelry. Such gifts may even provide tax savings.
  8. Consider establishing a life income gift that will provide current income to you and/or a loved one, while providing significant tax benefits.
  9. Encourage family and friends to leave gifts to charitable organizations in their wills or trusts.
  10. Ask your financial advisor(s) to encourage charitable giving as part of their counsel to clients.
